Did you know that in our local village of Whitchurch Canonicorum is the very ancient church of St Candida and the Holy Cross?
It is the only parish church in England to contain the remains of an ancient saint and is extremely rare as all shrines were ordered to be destroyed during the Reformation. The St Wite shrine is a stone chest which contains her remains with three large oval openings for pilgrims to put their afflicted limbs into in the hope that they would be cured.
